Overview
Lung
cancer is an abnormal growth of cells in one or both the lungs. The abnormal
cells interrupt the normal functions of the lungs and as they grow these cells
form a tumor. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths across the world
and both women and men are affected by it. Lung cancer claims more lives every
year than do ovarian, colon, prostate and breast cancer combined.
People
who smoke are at a greater risk of having lung cancer, although lung cancer can
also occur in people who have never smoked. The risk of lung cancer increases
with the length of time and number of cigarettes one smokes. If one has stopped
smoking, even after smoking for several years, he may significantly reduce the
chances of developing lung cancer.
There are 2 main types of lungs cancer:
- Small cell lung cancer (SCLC): Small cell lung cancer
starts in the air tubes that advances to the bronchi and affect the lung tissue. It produces large tumors that can spread faster to various other parts. This is generally seen in chronic and lifetime smokers. It has 2
subtypes:
- Small cell carcinoma (oat cell
carcinoma) is more common
- Combined cell carcinoma
- Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC): Makes up 85% of all the
lung cancer which is slow-growing and larger and has the following types:
- Squamous cell carcinoma
- Adenocarcinoma
- Large cell carcinoma
