Get Liver Transplant by India’s Best Surgeons

Overview

Liver transplant is the surgery to replace the diseased liver with the healthy liver from the donor. The entire liver can be transplanted or even just a part of it. In most of the cases a healthy liver will come from organ donor who has just died. Sometimes a healthy person donates a part of their liver. The living donor is usually a family member or it may be the one who is not related to the patient but whose blood is a good match.

People who donate part of their liver can live healthily with the part liver that is left. The liver is the only organ that can replace damaged or injured tissue (regrow). The donor’s liver will grow back soon to the normal size after the surgery. The part that patient receives as new liver will also grow to the normal size in few weeks.

What are the Types of Liver Transplant?

1-Deceased donor transplants:

Majority of livers for transplants come from the people who have just died, known as the deceased donors. During the deceased donor transplant, the surgeons remove the injured or diseased liver and replace it with deceased donor’s liver. Adults usually receive the entire liver from the deceased donor. However, surgeons may split the deceased donor’s liver in two parts. The larger part goes to an adult, and the smaller part goes to the smaller adult or child.

2-Living donor transplants:

Sometimes a healthy person donates the part of his or her liver, usually to the family member who is suggested for liver transplant. This type of donor is known as living donor. During living donor transplant, surgeons remove a part of the healthy liver. Surgeons remove the injured or diseased liver and replace it from the living donor’s liver part. The living donor’s liver grows to the normal size soon after the surgery. The part of the liver that the patient receives also grows to the normal size. Living donor transplants are not as common as deceased donor transplants.
