Overview: Uterus Removal Surgery
The Uterus is
a part of reproductive system in women that is a hollow muscular organ located in the female pelvis between
the bladder and rectum. The prime function of uterus is to nourish the
developing fetus prior to birth i.e. throughout nine months of
pregnancy.
Often due to various pathological conditions, it becomes
necessary to perform Uterus Removal Surgery, termed as Hysterectomy. Depending
on specific reasons for the uterus removal surgery, surgeon will remove all or
only part of the uterus.
Most common reasons for uterus removal surgery are:
- Uterine Fibroids - Benign Neoplasms
- Irregular and/or Severe Vaginal Bleeding
- Dysmenorrhoea i.e. Painful menstruation
- Uterine Prolapse
- Endometriosis
- Myometritis – inflammation of the muscular uterine wall
- Adenomyosis– ectopic growth of endometrial tissue within the myometrium
- Asherman's syndrome- in which intrauterine adhesions occurs when basal layer of endometrium is damaged by instrumentation like D&C or infection like endometrial tuberculosis resulting in endometrial scarring
- Hematometra- accumulation of blood within the uterus
- Chronic Pelvic Pain
- Pelvic Inflammatory Diseases i.e. Bacterial or Sexually Transmitted Infections

Uterus removal surgery is also performed to treat uterine
malformations mainly congenital malformations. The surgery is
performed to avoid serious complications due to serious injuries, severe
infections or uncontrollable bleeding during childbirth.
Uterus Removal Surgery i.e. hysterectomy
can be:
- Supracervical or Subtotal Hysterectomy- in which only upper part of uterus is removed while cervix, fallopian tubes and ovaries remain in place.
- Total Hysterectomy- for removal of entire uterus and cervix – without removing fallopian tubes and ovaries
- Radical Hysterectomy–involves removal of whole uterus, supporting tissue on sides of uterus, cervix and nearby parts of vagina
Sometimes, Hysterectomy
also includes the removal of fallopian tubes, ovaries and pelvic lymph nodes,
such as:
- Hysterectomy with Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy – in which fallopian tubes and ovaries are removed along with uterus.
- Hysterectomy Prophylactic Bilateral Salpingectomy – is recommended for removing fallopian tubes during uterus removal surgery because early ‘ovarian’ cancers, originate in the fallopian tubes.
- Hysterectomies can be carried out in different ways, such as:
- Vaginal hysterectomy
- Abdominal hysterectomy
- Laparoscopic hysterectomy
- Robotic hysterectomy
